International Day of Friendship 30 July

International Day of Friendship 30 July

29 July 2015

This global day for friendship was first proposed in 1958 and lobbied for by the across-race foundation The World Friendship Crusade.

Prior to this, it had been criticised as a commercial gimmick promoted by Hallmark Cards in the 1930’s. 30th July was declared World Friendship day by the UN in 2011, although some countries, including India, celebrate it on the first Sunday in August. A UN resolution emphasises involving young people in community activities for this celebration, to encourage cultural understanding and international diversity.

UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon has highlighted this date as an opportunity to promote altruism and peace - “let us cultivate warm ties that strengthen our common humanity and promote the well-being of the human family”, he said. This is a day to foster kind hearts and human solidarity, to continue building bridges to sustain our future.
