The link between exposure to certain chemicals and bladder cancer was discovered in the 1950s and 60s when many of the toxic chemicals were banned.  

However, the biggest risk factor for Bladder Cancer is smoking because cigarette smoke contains the chemicals known to cause the condition.  It can take up to 25 years for symptoms of this condition to develop.
