GMB Regional Secretary Paul McCarthy on why GMB will be fighting for a Labour victory in the general election:

“On June 8th the British people will be going to the polls in what is, without a doubt, the most important general election in decades.

Not only is a right wing Tory push for a “hard brexit” on the cards and with it the risk of further stifling our economy for years to come, but an increased majority for the Tories will be hugely damaging to an already fragile recovery, housing prospects for young people and devastating for our NHS.  Not to mention those vulnerable and aging members of our society who continue to come under attack from a heartless tory elite that would rather slash taxes for their rich friends than invest in quality care for the very people who made this country what it is. As campaigning moves into the final few days before the election on Thursday,  Labour have said they will aim to help tens of millions of people who are struggling on lower incomes by cutting the rate of VAT.

The new pledge to use the proceeds of future growth to reduce VAT from its current 20% level came as Theresa May and her senior ministersappeared to be at loggerheads over the Conservatives’ own tax policies.  Theresa May continued to refuse to rule out a tax increase, despite two senior ministers stating that there would be none.

Announcing the proposal, would-be Chancellor John McDonnell said:
“What we are saying is that the concept of fairness is at the heart of everything we do”
“When it comes to tax, it will always be a fair policy and if I can reduce the burden of taxation on middle and low earners I will do it as we grow the economy.  I will do it”.

GMB members, Officers and activists continue campaigning hard for Labour and with just a week to go their efforts could be making all the difference as the polls are showing an ever closing gap between Labour and the Conservatives.

As Labour began to roll out their manifesto and highlighted their key pledges to the country voters have warmed to Jeremy Corbym and his ratings continue to go up in the polls whilst the cracks in the Tory strategy are getting wider and wider.

Jeremy Corbyn appeared on the BBC leaders debate on Wednesday night and the fact that the Tories are screaming about BBC bias and that the audience were all left wingers shows just how well Jeremy Corbyn came across and how rattled they are after Teresa May’s no show.

Jeremy Corbyn challenged Teresa May’s stand in Amber Rudd over the impact of the government’s spending cuts and asked her “if she thinks this is a country at ease with itself: have you been to a food bank? “Have you seen people sleeping around our stations? Have you seen the levels of poverty that exist because of your government’s conscious decisions on benefits?”

Campaigning will continue ahead of polling day on June 8th.
