Hold the date ...29 September

GMB North West & Irish Region
You will be aware that the TUC General Council has called for a March and rally at the Conservative Party Conference. Final details are being put together this week but it is envisaged that the march will assemble from 11am in Liverpool Road on Sunday 29th September, moving off at midday, and ending with a rally at Whitworth Park from 2pm to 4pm. Coaches should be able to drop off at Water Street/Liverpool Road, then move to a parking area adjacent to Whitworth Park for pick ups . Once we have final clearance on the full route and logistics we will circulate this.

Advice for ASDA members about tax demands

GMB North West & Irish Region
A number of ASDA members have received letters from HM Revenue & Customs informing them that in their particular case there was an underpayment of tax in the last financial year (ending April 2013).  We are raising this issue with ASDA at our scheduled forum meeting next week to determine why this has happened, but in the meantime we advise members to contact HMRC to obtain an explanation and full breakdown of their specific amount and secondly insist the company arranges as long a time frame as possible to make the repayments (if in fact you do owe anything).

Runcorn construction workers walkout

GMB North West & Irish Region
Around 670 construction workers downed tools unofficially at Runcorn Thermal Power Station on Friday of last week. They forced the £65 million project to a complete stop.

Workers say they face bullying and intimidation over working practices. They are members of the Unite and GMB Trade Union. They last walked out in January over “disgusting” conditions in the kitchens and toilets. They were paid £250 to return to work. But one worker last week said “this time we are sticking to our guns”.
