Every year the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign hold a wonderful, vibrant trade union rally at Orgreave to commemorate the day Striking Miners were brutalised by police at the Orgreave Coking plant on 18th June 1984. This gives us all an opportunity to meet and show solidarity with comrades and friends and gather together with our magnificent display of banners and placards.

GMB UNION FEARS FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY OF COURIER DRIVER MEMBERS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Health and Safety fears at Yodel couriers in Northern Ireland

Removal of the scheme has serious health & safety implications, as there is an increased risk of cross contamination of Covid-19

ONE of the largest courier firms in the UK are putting staff at deadly risk by imposing changes on their drivers across Northern Ireland.

The GMB union has slammed the decision to force through a plan, removing the right of staff to take the vans home after work. They argue that the timing couldn’t be worse as people attempt to come to terms with the deadly pandemic, which has so far caused over 50,000 deaths in the UK.

The issue of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in social care has been one of the huge problems faced by GMB union members working in social care during the Coronavirus Pandemic. The social care workforce were originally excluded from Government and Public Health England Guidance. The GMB union was successful in getting this guidance amended.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND SCHOOLS PAY UPDATE GMB UNION

GMB trade union teacher pay update

The Local Government Association Board made up of elected councillors have done a U-turn on a key part of the Local Government Pay Offer. In the pay offer letter dated 16th April 2020, the employer said:

‘Employer side to make representations to the government in order to seek funding for an additional amount to be awarded above the tabled 2.75% to employees in recognition of the exceptional hard work’.

GMB UNION SECURES COVID-19 SICK PAY BREAKTHROUGH IN PRIVATE CARE

Pay Win for Carers during Covid-19 by GMB trade union

GMB Trade Union North West & Irish region welcomes the announcement from Britain’s largest care home provider HC One that they will pay full sick pay to care workers who have to go off sick following exposure to COVID-19.

Prior to today’s announcement, staff employed by the private care provider could only access statutory sick pay of £95.85 per week if unable to attend work having been infected by the virus.

GMB Update on Government proposals to increase school and early years pupil numbers in England from 1st June

On Friday 15 May GMB, along with other education unions, met with Professor Chris Whitty the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Patrick Vallance the government’s Chief Medical Advisor, along with other government scientists and members of SAGE (Scientific advisory group for emergencies) to discuss the risks of Coronavirus transmission by children, and the science behind the proposals to widen the opening of schools from 1 June.
