Job losses at Sports Direct in Wigan
16 April 2019

Sports Direct announced on Monday, without prior warning and completely unexpected, that the warehouse is set for closure. This is a company with a track record of putting profits before people says GMB Union

The Sports Direct warehouse in Wigan is set to close in June, the company has announced to workers, cutting 300 jobs. This has come as a massive blow to the workforce, who had no idea and completely surprised. Workers are devastated, many left in tears and facing an uncertain future.

GMB, Britain's general union, has described the closure of a Sports Direct warehouse as a 'body blow for the North West'.

The packing facility in Wigan will close on June 13 with the loss of 300 jobs.

Paul McCarthy, GMB Regional Secretary, said:

This closure is another body blow for the North West – caused by a company with a track record of putting profits before people.

The hard-working, dedicated staff at the warehouse have already been put through the grinder once when the site was run by JJB - and now this.

GMB will not rest until every member receives the redundancy pay they are legally entitled. Then we will discuss next steps.”
