Peter Tatchell offers alternative economics to austerity
8 November 2016

Peter Tatchell, from the Peter Tatchell Foundation, is a human rights campaigner. Originally known for his work with the LGBT social movement; but in recent years he has become the voice of many campaigns linked to human rights, democracy and global justice. Peter has recently won the James Joyce Award 2016 and was granted an honorary fellowship by University College Dublin. He dedicated his award to LGBT group, Sexual Minorities Uganda in a speech titled ‘The future evolution of human sexuality’.

He spoke to the audience in Liverpool about two ideas on alternative economics for a credible alternative to the conservative agenda, which are Alternatives to austerity and Economic democracy.

Alternatives to austerity

  • Cancel high speed HS2 to save £50 to £80 billion per year
  • Scrap Trident to save over £100 billion per year
  • End tax avoidance loop holes to save £30 billion plus per year
  • Halt pension tax relief for high earners, over £150 000 per year to save £20 billion per year
  • Financial transaction tax at 0.05%, it would raise a minimum of £50 billion per year
  • One off wealth tax would raise £800 billion

Economic democracy, like political democracy, should include employee elected directors to sit on the board and take part in decisions. All medium size and large companies, also large public bodies and the NHS; similar to the German model where workers have representation on the company board. This is not new and has been proposed by Labour in the 1970’s.
