Judges rule that the work and pensions secretary acted unlawfully

A panel of judges has ruled that the government’s controversial work-for-your-benefit schemes are unlawful and that the secretary of state for work and pensions had acted unlawfully by not giving unemployed people enough information about the penalties they faced and their rights to appeal against being made to work unpaid (in some cases hundreds of hours).

Care Staff celebrate Union deal victory!

GMB North West & Irish Region

Staff at 500 privately owned care homes celebrated a victory today after three trade unions won recognition from Britain's largest independent care provider.

Four Seasons Health Care signed a landmark voluntary joint recognition agreement with the unions GMB Trade-Union, the Royal College of Nursing and Unison and the unions believe the deal will protect the future of 30,000 staff who care for 20,000 mainly elderly residents.

They also believe consultations between Four Seasons management and staff will improve working conditions and raise care standards.

Wards dangerously understaffed, say nurses in survey

More than half of nurses believe their NHS ward or unit is dangerously understaffed, according to a survey. The Nursing Times conducted an online poll of nearly 600 of its readers on issues such as staffing, patient safety and NHS culture.

3213 names on the construction industry black list. Are you one of them?

GMB North West & Irish Region

GMB’s priority is to step up the campaign to get every blacklisted GMB member compensation. GMB Trade-Union is calling on councils not to award work to the companies that operated the blacklist until they compensate those they damaged. GMB is also pushing ICO for a proactive action to inform all builders affected that they are on the blacklist.
