GMB North West & Irish Region
9 December 2015

On the 10th of December at 2pm we will be holding a demonstration outside Lloyds bank

The address is Spring Gardens, Manchester M2 1EN. The demonstration is all about paying the living wage to security staff and cleaners.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) have both signed up as Living Wage Foundation accredited employers, yet fail to honour that commitment to  Security Workers and cleaners who are contracted to work at their buildings across Britain.

GMB supports the work of Living Wage Foundation to raise wages. We will pursue an active campaign, so that RBS and Lloyds ensure members working for contractors are treated the same as direct staff.

GMB is calling on RBS and Lloyds banks "to put your money where your mouth is" and pay a living wage to staff working in the bank’s prestigious buildings.

GMB will continue to press for a living wage to be set at £10 per hour. #£10NOW

It has suited both RBS and Lloyds to sign up to being accredited living wage employers as all their staff are already paid more. Unless the banks fund the Living Wage NOW workers will be consigned to poverty pay for years to come, and this becomes just a cheap PR stunt!

GMB members make clear in their experience you need at least £10 an hour and a full working week to have a decent life free from benefits and tax credits. Less than £10 an hour means just existing not living. It means a life of isolation, unable to socialise. It means a life of constant anxiety over paying bills and of borrowing from friends, family and pay day loan sharks just to make ends meet.
