GMB trade union 2018 Congress
7 June 2018

“Delegates from the North West & Irish region are heading back today from Brighton following another successful GMB Congress. The annual event, which started on Sunday, took in 3 sectional conferences this year (Commercial Services, Manufacturing and Public Services) and more than 50 delegates from our region took part in shaping the industrial, political, and social policy of the union.

Successful motions from our region included calling on the GMB to continue the 27 year fight in seeking justice for the families of those who died in the Hillsborough Disaster and to ensure the abhorrent way in which families and communities have been treated in recent years never happens again.

Congress also elected a new President, Barbara Plant, following the sad passing of Mary Turner last year. Barbara was brought up on a South London council estate and was the first person in her family to go to university. A former teacher, Barbara took time out to have and look after her children, before returning to her children’s primary school as a teaching assistant - which is where she joined GMB, 20 years ago.

Barbara takes up her position immediately and will receive the full support of the North West & Irish region”.
