SHREWSBURY 24 WIN 50 YEAR CAMPAIGN TO OVERTURN JUSTICE

GMB union supports Shrewsbury 24 campaign for justice

Whilst it is only right that these convictions are overturned, it is a sorry day for British justice.

Ricky Tomlinson and other members of the so-called ‘Shrewsbury 24’ who were jailed for picketing nearly 50 years ago have won their bid to clear their names at the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal has ruled on appeals against conviction on behalf of 14 members of the "Shrewsbury 24" who were convicted for unlawful assembly, conspiracy to intimidate or affray after picketing building sites in Shrewsbury in the 1972 national builders' strike.

The Health Minister has also come under fire for the shambles and non-compliance of the PPE scandal, where millions of pounds worth of contracts were given out to some companies who could be classified as his pals.

STOP BLAMING WOMEN FOR CRIMES COMMITTED AGAINST THEM

GMB union says stop blaming women

Most men are our allies and would welcome a positive move that would prevent us from being victims, calling out acts of misogyny where they see it.

Isn’t it About Time we Stopped Blaming Women for the Crimes Being Committed Against Them?

Almost all women, know a woman who has been raped or sexually assaulted but how many men know a rapist/attacker? Could this be due to the fact that many are not reported by the victim, for fear of blame?

Data from the UN shows that 97% of young women have been sexually harassed.

We felt this poem illustrated exactly the mood of many women, with the feelings and emotions of the poem being felt by the hundreds of thousands of women who have shouldered much of the burden.

GMB union Equalities Group poem, I Bend by Selena Odom

GMB union Equalities group read a poem, I Bend by Selena Odom , for International Women’s Day.

As we celebrate International Womens Day, the womens network looked at the role women have played throughout the pandemic. We identified that it is women who are more likely to have taken on those extra caring responsibilities. Many families prior to lockdown moved vulnerable family members into their homes to form bubbles, the majority of the extra work and caring for this will have fallen on women.
