GMB Young Members attending the Irish Congress of Trade Unions' Youth Conference
23 February 2016

This year's conference was on building current and future young trade union activism.

Delegates attended workshops on campaign strategies, young workers' issues and awareness of unions and listened to speeches by young trade unionists from across Ireland who had been involved in huge recent campaigns such as Right2Water and YES Equality.

On the conference, GMB Northern Ireland young member Darren McMullan, said:

"At this conference we discussed how to keep moving the trade union movement forward by engaging in activities looking at past and present campaigns, as well as coming up with an agenda and action plan for NIC-ICTU Youth. This conference was great for GMB Young Members in Northern Ireland in strengthening our links and with NIC-ICTU Youth so we can help fight for rights and opportunities for young workers.

I found the conference really interesting and informative and came away very motivated. This conference has definitely showed me how the trade union movement is moving forward and how the GMB is playing a key part in this."

NW&I Young Members would like to thank the NIC-ICTU Youth Committee for organising such an excellent and inspiring conference this year! We look forward to using the momentum built from the weekend to work together with all young trade union groups at the conference, fighting for rights and opportunities for young workers in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.
