Marley Eternit claimed tough market conditions and “low productivity” had prompted the move.  Our Trade Union is in negotiations to secure redundancy packages.  Some jobs could transfer to the firm’s other sites.

Staff were given 90 days’ notice and the site, which makes clay tiles, will close in June.  GMB Trade Union organiser Graham McDermott said the first staff will leave in May. He said: “There is very little hope. We will be trying to secure the best package available for the workforce.  With the current climate you never know when you will be employed again.”
 
Marley Eternit sales director Paul Reed said: “We don’t envisage any short-term improvement.”
