No-one should be paid less than the living wage.

The GMB Trade-Union are calling on the town hall to bring the lowest paid council workers up to the living wage, currently £7.45 per hour, and to do the same for outsourced staff.  This has been the response:

The Council notes:
That a growing number of local authorities are now paying or are committed to pay the Living Wage.
That the Living Wage is a level of pay which is based on the principle of decency that work should pay at least enough to provide for the essentials of life.
That the Living Wage has been independently set nationally at £7.45 and £8.55 for London.

Therefore:
This Council supports the introduction of the Living Wage for all its employees. It will work towards accreditation as a Living Wage Employer and will seek to ensure its contractors and suppliers of goods and services do likewise.
This Council will ask its officers to consider the financial implications of the Living Wage, including in contracted-out services, and to begin a dialogue with recognised trade unions in readiness for its early implementation.
