Neil Smith worked with Harry Young on work placement at GMB trade union
24 April 2019

As part of his placement it was decided to give him a broad fit of what Politics is like at the coal-face rather than sit behind a desk and be a keyboard warrior and with this in mind we went out campaigning with Cllrs and MPs to see the issues that are being discussed on a regular basis, we also did a visit to L6 Community centre in Liverpool which is an integral part of the community due to the Austerity cuts imposed by the Tories, we also had a meeting with the Metro Mayor for Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram to discuss his vision for the area and where he sees progress being made, Harry also did a full day in Manchester City Council in meetings with Cllrs on how they have to deal with the horrendous cuts that have happened to there budget, he also did some research for the Region in to Case Law and the impact it has on our members which we will use going forward as part of our Induction course for new stewards.

We did a visit to Parliament and met some MPs on the day to see the helter skelter way of life in HoC and to see the everyday drama of Politics within the House itself, the placement finished with Harry addressing the Regional committee and giving feedback of what he got out of the placement and where he sees himself going forward Politically, going forward I have no doubt that Politics and the system needs a shake up and when it does then hopefully young members Like Harry will be there to grab the moment and make the future exactly what it should be so that we get the Labour Government that we and the country is crying out for!
