Regional Secretary, Paul McCarthy, was invited to Astra Zeneca for the New Apprenticeship Scheme introduction evening. Joining him convenor Ian Brocklehorst and senior Neil Holden.

The Pharmaceutical Giant ASTRA ZENECA recently announced the re-introduction their Apprenticeship scheme. The company ceased its high quality apprenticeship scheme a few years ago and the GMB have always believed that to be a retrograde step. The news was warmly greeted by GMB Union Convenor Ian Brocklehurst, as a step in the right direction for the company, GMB members and the local community.

To mark this event, Astra Zeneca welcomed the 30 new apprentices, who will be located at the Macclesfield site, to a special event evening at the site, where the young Apprentices and there parents could meet Andy Evans, Head of Macclesfield site and other leaders from Astra Zeneca. Andy Evans said: “We are proud to have you joining us at Astra Zeneca. We believe it is important to invest in the future and I believe the future is in this room tonight.”

The GMB Union were invited to attend the evening and meet the new recruits. GMB Regional Secretary Paul McCarthy said "the return of such high quality apprenticeships is welcome news and an example of a forward thinking company".

This is the largest intake of apprentices to the company in the North West for several years, with placements spanning engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, IT and human resources. The young people, who have taken their A levels, will spend between two and four years working in different functions while also continuing their studies. Then they hope to be offered a full time role that will kick start their careers.
