75 EMPLOYERS NAMED AND SHAMED FOR FAILING TO PAY THE NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE

HMRC have today released details of a further 75 employers who have failed to pay their staff the minimum wage. The naming and shaming scheme was launched in 2013 and so far details of cases involving around 300 employers have been published online after being probed by HMRC with total arrears of almost £800,000 and penalties of more than £325,000. The list includes a variety of different businesses, large and small, ranging from hairdressers and caterers to nursery schools and insurance services.

GMB Regional Secretary Paul McCarthy said:

“It is a disgrace that a large number of employers are still able to dodge paying staff a minimum wage that is already much too low. Rather than just naming and shaming these employers, action should be taken to prosecute them, particularly the worst offenders, and the government needs to commit sufficient resources to enforce the national minimum wage which is after all a statutory requirement”.

Employers have a duty to be aware of the different legal rates for the National Minimum Wage.

The current National Minimum Wage rates are:

adult rate (21 and over) - £6.50 per hour
18 to 20-year olds - £5.13 per hour
16 to 17-year olds - £3.79 per hour
apprentice rate - £2.73 per hour*

*This rate is for apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. All other apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age.
