Blacklisted construction workers seek compensation

GMB North West & Irish Region
The GMB Trade union is to lodge claims in the High Court for compensation on behalf of 70 construction workers whose names were discovered on a blacklist. The union says the workers had job prospects and reputations ruined, and is taking legal action on their behalf, including lodging claims of defamation.It says the initial claims are "the tip of the iceberg" and that there are some 3,000 other workers with claims.

Council and GMB has new partnership agreement to support staff learning

GMB North West & Irish Region
Kirklees Council is one of the few councils in Yorkshire and Humberside to actively progress joint working with the Trade Unions to support functional skills in the workforce. The new partnership was launched on May 20 at Huddersfield Town Hall. It recognises the special role Union Learning Representatives (ULRs) are able to play to encourage employees to come forward and develop their English and Maths skills.

GMB joins the march for the NHS

GMB North West & Irish Region

Some 7,000 health workers, trade unionists and activists marched through London today, Saturday, to defend the NHS. Health workers came from Bristol, Brighton and Newcastle to join the protest.

Bedroom Tax victim commits suicide

Ten days ago Stephanie Bottrill sat in the redbrick terrace house which had been home for 18 years to write notes to her loved ones, the Sunday People reports. She ripped the pages from a spiral-bound notebook and placed them neatly in little brown envelopes.
